For Students

How to revise FLAT

Revision is most effective when it is:

  1. Focused on the most useful skills and knowledge, guided by teachers or tutors;
  2. Long-term, taking place throughout the course and the weeks (not days) leading up to exams;
  3. Active, requiring students to think hard and make use of the information they are learning;
  4. Transformative, takes information from one source, and out of their memory, into another form.

Pomodoro

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a method for staying focused and mentally fresh whilst you are doing revision.

STEP 1 - Pick a subject and a topic/task for your revision

STEP 2 - Set a 25-minute timer

STEP 3 - Work on your task until the time is up

STEP 4 - Take a 5 minute break

STEP 5 - Every 4 pomodoros, take a longer 15-30 minute break

Three rules for making the most of the Pomodoro Technique

  1. Break down complex topics. If a task requires more than four pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller steps. Sticking to this rule will help you ensure you make good progress.
  2. Small tasks go together. Any tasks that will take less than one pomodoro, should be combined with other simple tasks.
  3. Once a pomodoro is set, you must stick to it. The pomodoro is an indivisible unit of time and it cannot be broken. Make sure you mute your notifications and find a quiet space to complete it without distractions.
