How to revise FLAT
Revision is most effective when it is:
- Focused on the most useful skills and knowledge, guided by teachers or tutors;
- Long-term, taking place throughout the course and the weeks (not days) leading up to exams;
- Active, requiring students to think hard and make use of the information they are learning;
- Transformative, takes information from one source, and out of their memory, into another form.
Pomodoro
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a method for staying focused and mentally fresh whilst you are doing revision.
STEP 1 - Pick a subject and a topic/task for your revision
STEP 2 - Set a 25-minute timer
STEP 3 - Work on your task until the time is up
STEP 4 - Take a 5 minute break
STEP 5 - Every 4 pomodoros, take a longer 15-30 minute break
Three rules for making the most of the Pomodoro Technique
- Break down complex topics. If a task requires more than four pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller steps. Sticking to this rule will help you ensure you make good progress.
- Small tasks go together. Any tasks that will take less than one pomodoro, should be combined with other simple tasks.
- Once a pomodoro is set, you must stick to it. The pomodoro is an indivisible unit of time and it cannot be broken. Make sure you mute your notifications and find a quiet space to complete it without distractions.
